Single System Capture using a Field Mixer |
 |
Remember your workflow needs to match your production goals (this is a useful technique in your cannon)
Review: Dav1- good and bad microphone capture (the audio from the video track has been split to mono tracks)
- Bad: Note, the sound of off and on mic and clipping
- Good: Note, clap slate and slate tone, differing quality of sound from mic to mic
Class Assignment
Single System Recording (audio and video together, one capture device):
- Used in ENG (immediate in nature) note: the practice of second track with extra headroom
- Used for EFP packages and other projects that have little time for postproduction
- Advantages: Simple to set up, quick turnaround time (audio will be locked to video), portable and battery driven
- Disadvantages: S/N Ratio, self noise, more for the camera operator to monitor
Using a Field Mixer with a Single System Recording:
- Must be calibrated with itself and the camera
- Slating: tone, and internal microphone (clearly visible in audio tracks)
- Separate control and monitoring of the audio signal (input and output)
- Increased microphone inputs
- Lighted gauges, for those dark moments
- Preamplifiers, pan, limiters, eq
Over The Shoulder (OTS) Shot:
- Create Intimacy
- Track reactions
- Provide New Point of view
- Mind camera techniques: Proportions, eye line and angles, actors natural movement
OTS using a single microphone
- Generally tight and predictable camera (medium shot).
- Generally actor less movement.
- Focus on the cameras perspective (get great quality audio for the moving lips)
- L cut and substitution can be done in editing suite
Post-Production and single system material
Editing:
- Cut/segue (arggg. they have differing affect - audio vs. video)
- L Cut (the audio from the previous clip runs into the next clip at the cut)
- J Cut (the audio from the next clip runs into the previous clip at the cut)

Exchange/Interchange (exchange EDL information between editors)
- Share edit decisions with other software (and engineers)
- Remember to include with extended handles (or even better, full clip) so audio people can have the option to expand or decrease audio in and out points.
- AAF (Advanced Authoring Format)
- OMF (Open Media Framework)
Importing/exporting Interchange formats
